Vic: Baby Giraffe born at Melbourne Zoo
A tall story has emerged from the Melbourne Zoo with the birth of a rare Rothschild Giraffe.
The calf, already standing almost two metres tall, is only the second member of thehighly endangered species to be born there.
Rothschild's Giraffes are native to parts of Uganda, Kenya and Sudan and only about500 still survive in the wild.
Keeper-in-charge PAUL WHITEHORN says he'd been expecting mother Twiga to give birthwithin the next few days and a video camera recorded the birth at 10.55 last night.
The mother and baby will be left alone to bond over the next few days but zoo visitorscan see them via a video monitor.
Keepers have been unable to confirm the sex of the yet-unnamed baby but believe it's a female.
Its father Makulu was the first Rothschild Giraffe born in Australia, at Perth Zoo.
